HELP: How to grow long, healthy, shiny hair { + quickly?}

Jul 22, 2011

Hey dolls, I'm thinking a lot of you might be sharing my dilemma so I thought I'd share ...

My hair is in that in-between phase where it's not really short but it's not really long, either. It loves to defy me and flip out on the ends despite constant attempts at flat ironing. Everytime I see an adorable pixie cut, I have to restrain myself from grabbing my cell and calling the salon for an appointment.

I have always wanted super long hair but never had the patience to fully grow it out.

So I've decided it's going to be my summer {maybe fall, winter and spring, too} mission to nurture my hair and 'encourage' it to grow, grow, grow. I've been watching YouTube tutorials like it's my job and I've found a few tips and tricks that I'm thinking about trying out but I thought I'd see if my darling readers had any suggestions or tips they'd like to throw out there, too?

I picked up a jar of organic coconut oil at the grocery today because I read that you can use it as a deep conditioning method and it nourishes the ends and helps to stimulate hair growth without any icky chemicals. Anyone tried it?

I also heard about Castor Oil but it sounds a little incredibly scary! It supposedly smells atrocious {one girl compared the smell to a mechanic shop!!!} and leaves your hair way too greasy for days on ends. I don't know that I want to try it. Thoughts? Any products, tips, tricks that you want to share?

I'd love to hear from you and I promise to share my experiences with different products as well as some before and after photos! ;o) Cheers to long and healthy hair!

  2. Hi, I have waist-length hair but unfortunately nothing will make your hair grow faster other than taking care of it, which will help avoid breakage. The number one tip I have for growing your hair long is don't get it cut. In my experience, stylists always cut off more than you want, saying "oh, it looks much better now." But I never think it does and it really delays the growing process. And, it's a myth that getting your hair cut more often will make it grow faster. Trimming hair off your ends has nothing to do with your scalp or hair follicles. If you need a trim, do it yourself. I'm so excited for my wedding in November when I can really showcase my long hair. I almost always wear it up! Good luck and have patience. Long hair is so worth it!

  4. Sarah, I'm growing out a pixie and this is the first time a grow-out has not annoyed me. My trick is to keep the front longer than the back. I also use a curling iron to add extra volume and to hide any odd parts I don't care for. The more texture there is, the more it looks like it was meant to be that way! Mine is now more like an inverted bob, and I couldn't be happier. If you have longer hair, which if I remember from your photos I think you do, I think it will just take patience as your hair does its thing.

  6. I have hair down past my tush, and my secret is not washing it every day, and avoiding styling products. I use moroccean oil to sooth, protect, add shine, and de-tangle. I get it trimmed every 4-6 months, and I try not use heat styling tools, or to aggressively brush or de-tangle my hair. Also using only ouchless elastics as to not break my hair. After that...you just have to wait for it to grow!

  7. I disagree with not cutting your hair. I get mine trimmed every few months (it's to the middle of my back)- just taking off the dead ends so that they don't split higher and make your hair look nasty. True, your ends don't have anything to do with growth, but it has everything to do with keeping your long hair looking fabulous.

I definitely don't wash every day and I do stay away from drying products (those that have alcohol) and styling tools as much as possible. Moroccan oil is good, but I find it too heavy for my hair on a regular basis. Don't brush your hair when it's wet, use your fingers or a wide toothed comb or pick.

I hear scalp massages bring blood flow to your head which encourages growth! :) And hair and nails grow faster in the summer so it's a good time!

  8. Use a really high quality shampoo and conditioner that works well for your hair type. (might have to try a few out.) It will grow faster than you think.

  9. I am in the same boat! I've been taking Biotin, which you can find near the vitamins and supplements in any pharmacy. It's actually helping!

  10. I have chopped my hair off and grown it out well past shoulder length repeatedly since I was a kid. Try not to heat style too much, trim split ends regularly, and condition, condition, condition! You don't need fancy shampoos (sauve clarifying and head and shoulders have always been my faves/ they get all the styling gunk out completely) make sure you keep it squeaky clean, super condition the ends when you wash, DONT dry shampoo, and be sure to rinse thoroughly. I like to condition my hair extra with an avocado or Ojon's Restorative Hair Treatment occasionally. Slather it on, let it sit for 20 min.s then shower. Sometimes I'll even wrap my hair and head up in plastic wrap in the winter time to let the the heat from my head help the oils really penetrate my cuticle (I look crazy but it works great, lol). The only other things I've ever used are Aussie's 2 minute miracle for quick beach hair saves in the summer and V05's hot oil treatments for quick winter hair saves. It's all super easy + affordable, except the Ojon which lasts for-ev-er. I've always been told by hair stylists, family, friends, and strangers how fantastic my hair is. Plus my tips have helped friends too.... Side note: heathy diet and proper vitamin wouldn't hurt... :)

  11. Get real hair extensions. Totally worth the cost. Your hair will look perfect and no more stressing to make sure it's long enough for your wedding day. I have them and they are amazing. So glad I did it. Now I may not ever go without them.

  12. prenatals for sure or clip in extensions... or both :-)

  13. darling: my maid once recommended to use an avocado mask... initially it sounded kinda gross... but it worked!! It makes the hair shine and increases growth speed. Just go to an organic supermarket, get avocado, peel the skin of and take the heart out... then smash it and mix it with a bit of conditioner, put it on... from mids to tips and leave it on for half hour, do it every 2 weeks ;) hope it works for you!! 14. I have a long hair as well but it is not as healthy as my cousin. She has a long shiny hair. She said that she is just using shampoo and conditioner. Maybe it's with their genes.

  15. Get a Keratin Blow Out and then take vitamins. You will heat style less and the keratin will make your hair stronger and shiny!

  16. Hello! I am not a woman, but my hair is on the level of my waist. I did not use any "tricks", but the main things here were: as somebody before me said - not washing it every day (it's just not needed, the hair is not dirty), avoiding unnatural oils and chems and trimming it every year. Worked so far, but I am not sure how fast do you need it!

  17. castor oil smells like a mechanics? Are you sure you didn't use Castrol oil by mistake? (sorry) Good luck with the hair growing, mine annoys me when it gets past shoulder length and I always end up having to cut it, but then i have nooo patience at all!

  18. Try Biotin - totally did the trick for my wedding when I was growing my hair out.

  19. When I was in high school I made the serious mistake of having much of my very long hair chopped off for graduation. I spent that entire summer trying everything to grow it out. Mane N Tail did the trick. Made my hair grow faster, thicker and healthier than ever before: http://www.amazon.com/Mane-Tail-Shampoo-32/dp/B000QFRBNS

  20. Have you tried the Mane 'n Tail shampoo and/or conditioner. It actually makes my hair feel fuller and smoother than others, but I still use other conditioners to offer more body.

  21. Either Flintstone vitamins and Biotin as a combo or Pre-Natal and the Biotin. That's the way to go! I've only done the Flintston + Biotin combo but I've always been told pre-natal's work just the same. Good luck! I highly recommend you try this before putting that nasty gunk in your hair.

  22. Shea butter from Africa, get it on Amazon.com. Really works when your hair is slightly damp. I will wash and deep condition, apply a little Shea butter. The next day or two just let the steam from the shower keep it moist. As little heat as possible is the key.

Also, get an aloe vera plan, snip off part of a leaf and work the gel into our scalp.

I recovered my hair in about three months

  23. Try Biotin by Origin. It's a dietary supplement for hair and skin. You can get it from target and it's only $2.00. I started taking it 2 months before my wedding (july) and everybody was surprised on how long my hair is. Just take 1 after a meal everyday =)

  24. Dietary changes and proper supplementation are essential for growing your hair faster and stronger. And make sure to invest in a great conditioner to keep your health looking healthy (I like Aveda Damage Remedy) and a heat protector- such as Moroccan oil.

Biotin is the best supplement for hair and nails. I would recommend eating only whole foods and avoiding chemicals and processed foods. Just a month of this and you should notice a significant difference. I follow the FirstLine Therapy food plan from Metagenics.

This works for me so hopefully it will work for you and you will have some longer locks by the end of the summer!

  25. I am in the same boat.... my hair is a little past the shoulders and I am willing it to grow, but patience alas, is not my strongest trait :) Lucky my hairstylist (and bff) has big ideas for the wedding and is putting some extensions to fake the length, which is cheating, but fine by me :)

  26. I heard my female friends say that you have to massage shampoo on your hair for like 10 minutes to make your hair grow. I forgot the reason behind it, but it seems to be effective. I'll let them know about the organic coconut oil since they all want their hair to grow longer fast.

  27. There are lots of tips on the Long Hair Community forum, but hair grows, on average, 1/2 inch per month. People with long hair are just careful not to damage their hair or cut more than 1/2 inch per month. Pregnancy releases hormones that keep your hair in the growth stage longer before going into the shedding phase. This is why people think prenatal vitamins cause your hair to grow faster. They really do not. It's a false association. I have have healthy hair down to my hips and have learned from trial and error that avoiding ripping out tangles, never heat styling, and not washing every day is the way to go to get long, flowing hair.
