April Fridays with O&B: Planning A Vintage-Style Elopement, p.5
So pleased to welcome back Lisa Marie from Orange & Blossom to chat with us one last time this month! And enjoy a peek at Lisa Marie + Rikky's engagement photos shown below, too! The floor's all yours, Lisa Marie:
I’ve really enjoyed sharing the details of our elopement-honeymoon trip this summer. Thank you, Sarah! I want to send best wishes to everyone planning their wedding at the moment. Whether you have no guests (like us) or hundreds upon hundreds, may you create a day that reflects the two of you above all else, and never let the planning come before your own relationship. There are no rules—you create them. That’s what my final post is about…
One of my favorite poems applies to weddings of any size as well as it does to life in general. It is by Spanish poet Antonio Machado (1875-1939):
None of us had instructions on how to fall in love, and getting engaged certainly doesn’t include instructions on how to plan a wedding! That’s why I remind myself often: There are no rules. We make the road to our wedding day, just as we will create the road long after it. No one else’s will be the same as ours. And we have to embrace every choice.
My best advice from years of being involved in weddings: Keep your decisions simple and confident. Don’t be swayed. Set expectations with everyone so feelings don’t get hurt and your ideas don’t get compromised. Don’t get to the point of saying you just want to elope instead of having a wedding. The stress isn’t worth it. And if you really, truly, want to just run off and say your vows at City Hall like we are, you absolutely should!
I look back over the course of our relationship and we have certainly created a road for ourselves that doesn’t exactly follow tradition.
Meet => Start building a life together => Discuss matching tattoos => Get engaged => Wear wedding bands => Buy a wedding dress => Start thinking about having a wedding => Decide to elope => Book a photographer for our San Francisco City Hall ceremony => Keep building our life together…
You need your own road that has nothing to do with what other people want your big day to look like. Only you two will know. If you have the right person in your life, there is no real “right” order in planning a wedding or “right” ways of going about it. Everything IS right after that. (You wanted to know if we got the matching tattoos? I can’t tell all my secrets on a blog!) Congratulations on your own road, wherever you choose it will lead you.
Fabulous advice! Thanks for stopping by every Friday this month, Lisa Marie - It's truly been a joy having you and please know you're always welcome back! ;o)

SP*: Inspirational packing for a sweet Nantucket wedding ...
Apr 27, 2010 Posted by Sarah Darcy | FILED UNDER ... INSPIRATION BOARDS | 4 comments
Today I thought it would be fun to imagine styling a small Nantucket wedding on a cloudy spring day ... plus a peek at what I'd imagine to be the fabulous essentials that guests should pack for such a New England wedding ... Let me know if you think there's something I forgot! ;o)
Whenever the venue is naturally gorgeous without any embellishments, I like to see the color palette blend in to the surroundings rather than create a contrast. For this inspiration board, I took cues from the ubiquitous yet stunning weathered shingles found on the island and tried to inject lots of natural elements with a relaxed and rustic spin.

Row 2: Ceremony image found here; Florals via Alice Q. Foodie
Row 3: Tablescape via Sunday Suppers; Drinks via The Knot; Boutonnieres via Country Living
... And below is a peek at what I imagine to be the perfect packing for a couple headed to attend this delicious destination wedding:

Row 1: Degrade Seraphina dress from J. Crew to wear to the wedding; North Face Sidetrack luggage from Shoebuy - perfect to stow every last piece of clothing and jewelry!

Row 3: Seersucker bikini from J. Crew; North Face Masonic Hoodie in Shoreline Blue Heather from Shoebuy to cover up in case of a chill
Row 4: Lodis Sport French Purse with Frame in Green from Shoebuy; Sun-Down Shades from Anthropologie

April Fridays with O&B: Planning a Vintage-style Elopement, p.4
So sorry I'm a little late on this post but it looks like I'm going to be able to squeak by with a few minutes of Friday left for those of you still up {and at home} ;o) ... so let's welcome back Lisa Marie from Orange & Blossom to chat with us once again today ahem, tonight {and every Friday this month!}. It's all yours, Lisa Marie:
Thanks again, Sarah. Now that I’ve shared the wedding details, I thought it would be fun to delve into the vintage-inspired honeymoon trip …
One of the most fun parts about eloping is that we get to start our honeymoon before we even get married! Rikky and I plan to head up to San Francisco a day before our ceremony at City Hall, then stay on a few days to run around as “man and wife” and soak up the city.
For both the wedding and the honeymoon, we’ve kept things easy and affordable. We contacted 3 photographers based on their websites, cut one based on price, and chose Lilia Photo for her warm personality, artistic images, and vintage-inspired portfolio of City Hall. I contacted one makeup artist, Bara Krejcikova, who was referred by Lilia, and booked her quickly. We’ll have a trial at my house in June before the wedding in August. That makes it more expensive, but she kindly agreed to provide a few valuable makeup pointers during the trial. Phew… I need them! Because I’m opting for handbags over a bouquet and we’re still pondering options for Rikky (a handmade feather boutonniere, a vintage porcelain flower pin from England, an orange handkerchief Ă la his all-time-favorite Frank Sinatra?), no florist was required.
{Image credits: Left: Frank Sinatra care of Telegraph; Top right: Makeup by Bara Krejcikova (On her blog: http://barakrejcikova.blogspot.com/2010/01/wedding-kelli.html); Bottom right: Lilia photo}
We opted for a few more nights at a less expensive hotel over 2 nights at the view-laden Mandarin Oriental. (We have our whole lives to travel in high style, right?) In keeping with the vintage feel, Hotel Vertigo was a perfect finishing touch. It’s a renovated, retro-style old hotel that plays homage to its namesake Hitchcock film, which plays continuously on a loop in the lobby. Some scenes were filmed in the original hotel that occupied this building, and leading lady Kim Novak lived here during the last half of filming. The mod orange interior and dizzying staircase will make for some fun photos when we come back to change clothes.

Beyond the hotel, we envision a romantic yet restful adventure filled with experiences we can’t have at home. On the list of possibilities: Chinatown for two pairs of newlywed chopsticks (I use them at every meal), Japantown for wooden sandals and a cast iron teapot for our evening tea, an Ethiopian restaurant, the classic Conservatory of Flowers (constructed in 1878) and Palace of Fine Arts, a hand-carved wooden booth in the Fantasy Room of the Maharani Indian restaurant (with silk cushions and beaded curtains, it’s all about the atmosphere), an old wine bar, a historic food tour, a tea house with garden (we enjoyed one so much in Venice where we got engaged), paddle boats on Stow Lake, views of the Golden Gate Bridge from Crissy Field, North Beach for pastries, CafĂ© Claude for jazz among vintage travel posters, and Top of the Mark (popular among WWII Navy officers) for a drink and the view. We may have to save some of these, and a walk among the larger-than-anything redwoods of Muir Woods, for anniversary visits. Thank goodness for the quick one-hour flight!

Wow, I am in love with Hotel Vertigo!! Thanks for stopping by again, Lisa Marie! See you next Friday!

April Fridays with O&B: Planning a Vintage-style Elopement, p.3
So pleased to welcome back Lisa Marie from Orange & Blossom to chat with us once again today {and every Friday this month!}. It's all yours, Lisa Marie:
Thank you Sarah for another Friday to guest blog about our elopement planning! This has been a perfect forum for which to give our day more thought, articulate our ideas, and share them for others who may be considering a similar type of vintage-style wedding day.
It’s pretty easy to get inspired for your wedding, and that includes elopements. Of course, “inspirational” doesn’t always equal “meaningful.” Meaning takes inspiration to a whole other level. That’s doubly true for elopements. With no invitations and programs, no readings or songs, no toasts or dances, meaning needs to come from new places. I wanted our short but sweet civil ceremony, along with the hours and days surrounding it, to move me, to have a timeless, eternal quality to them, to be steeped in weight and significance. We’ve found several ways to layer the meaning behind the marriage ...
Like any bride, I wanted each object to have an importance and there have been happy coincidences along the way: The 1960s dress & jacket I chose for ensemble #2 comes from Lizbeth Jeanne, a dress shop in Toledo, Ohio, where I was born; the earrings I fell for at first sight are a vintage Farrah Fawcett design—a woman of strength and beauty. It was kismet to find an unused “Orange Blossoms” vintage wedding album from 1942. We look forward to hand writing our story inside.
And the natural-colored personalized Lokta photo albums handcrafted in Nepal have just been added to my shop. I ordered the first one from our new artist, Aurora Palesca Designs, who adds the customizable calligraphy. We’ll fill it with photos and mementos from the trip.
Part of my wedding gift to Rikky are the vintage sterling silver armorial-style cufflinks that read: “To Practice the Truth in Love.” We do that every day.
I also plan to wear my grandmother’s 25th anniversary diamond ring on my right hand that day. I have always adored the way it glistens and reminds me of her hands and her caring spirit.
With so much time before August, we’re still formulating ways to have a meaningful day. For certain, we’ll get ready together instead of separately. As part of that, I’ve decided to wear contacts, which makes me nervous in a good way. It will mark the first time since high school that I have ventured out without hiding behind the safe comfort of my glasses. I wanted to step into the world that day as a new person, as I know that’s how I will feel.
We’ll also perform a Moroccan rosewater hand washing ritual before leaving for San Francisco City Hall. It symbolizes a cleansing of the past and preparation for new life—and smells wonderful!
I think we’ll also spend time reading some of our own words to each other post ceremony. We’ve written so much to each other over the years, we pictured sitting down and compiling some of the truest words that bear repeating.
There may be additional things we’ll say or do that day or week or month to add personal meaning. But we’re still making those decisions. One thing I suggest to brides, whether you’re eloping or not: If you have rituals in your day to day life, add them to your wedding. If you don’t, start some now that you can continue. Every summer, Rikky and I make an annual “fragrance trip” where we spend hours at the counters choosing just the right new fragrance for each other to wear. This year in July we’ll choose our wedding day scents.
Instead of a group celebration back at home, we plan to enjoy the people in our life individually, in a way that reflects our personal relationship with them. We’ll have more time to visit with them, share our feelings about our new life and how much we will continue to value them in it, and savor the togetherness. We look forward to a first wedded year filled with these small-scale celebrations.
Thanks for stopping by again, Lisa Marie! See you next Friday!

SP*: Designer Crush: Valentino
I think these Valentino looks would all work so well for wedding day 'getaway' attire. The structured ruffles tend to create a modern take on the popular pillbox-hat-and-suit getaway look from the 1960s.
Also looooving the idea of adding some gorgeous diamond accents to these looks from the Everlon Collection. Yum!

April Fridays with O&B: Planning a Vintage-style Elopement, p. 2
Apr 9, 2010 Posted by Sarah Darcy | FILED UNDER ... FASHION | 2 comments
So pleased to welcome back Lisa Marie from Orange & Blossom to chat with us once again today {and every Friday this month!}. It's all yours, Lisa Marie:
This is the post I’ve been waiting for. (Thank you, Sarah!) Last week I shared a little about how we came to the very happy decision to elope this August. Now … what to wear? For me, it all started with the dress. Before we had even pinned down a date or a location, I stumbled upon a 1950s Priscilla of Boston dress on eBay that gave me the same feeling I had the night I met Rikky: I found it! Not a true traditionalist, we pored over the auction listing together and decided that it should be mine. That big cupcake of a dress with billowy layers that remind me of buttercream frosting was the first tangible piece of the puzzle. I closed the laptop and fell asleep quietly elated.
The Details:
The dress: 1950s Priscilla of Boston
The earrings: 1980s/1990s Farrah Fawcett earrings (No need for a necklace; these are huge! She sold her jewelry line on QVC. So 1950s to me.)
The bracelet: Vintage
The handbag: Vintage hand-beaded purse by Josef USA (It’s missing a pearl from the top clasp, which I love. The lack of perfection and obvious use charms me.)
The feather shrug: Vintage Bonwit Teller made in England
The shoes: Purchased years ago at Enzo Angiolini on my lunch hour during my days as an editor at Bridal Guide magazine. The shop was down the street and when I saw them I thought: “Those are my wedding shoes!” A dreamer, I figured I would meet the right person eventually!
Eloping creates a unique phenomenon: the wedding will be wherever we are. It’s a mobile celebration. Once we decided to elope at architecturally stunning San Francisco City Hall, I knew the cupcake dress in the closet would be perfect. Alas, not exactly practical for the rest of our marriage day running around the city. I decided {with the loving encouragement of my fiancĂ©} to allow myself a little obsession. Two dresses were in order! I started the search for a Jackie O.-style suit that, to me, expressed the essence of eloping in vintage-style.
The Details:
The dress and jacket: Vintage beaded & gold brocade set
The shoes: Steve Madden Women’s Dreemm (my dad’s name is Steve; the shoe name took the cake)
The handbag: Vintage patent purse by Woolf Brothers (once a family-owned luxury goods department store in Kansas City)
The earrings: Vintage Trifari from a nearby antique store
The accessory: Vintage gold Scope telescoping cigarette holder (meant to be hung from a keychain) for the celebratory mini cigar
My heart and soul have always responded to items filled with a historic mystique and stories untold. Being drawn to what has been loved before me is who I’ve always been. My vintage fashion choices fell quickly and easily into place. Note the lack of a bouquet. When you elope, there’s no home base where you can set things down, and having lipstick on hand seemed more dire.
Such great insight! Thanks so much for sharing these gorgeous wedding fashions and ideas, Lisa Marie! For more inspiration, check out LM's fabulous wedding blog and make sure to stop by CB next Friday for another peek at LM's planning! Happy Friday!
