Megan + Jesse's Southern {Slice of Heaven} wedding
Mar 30, 2010 Posted by Sarah Darcy | FILED UNDER ... REAL WEDDING , SOUTHERN CHARM | 13 comments
I'm always wowed by the real wedding submissions I receive but - oh my lord, Megan and Jesse's wedding made my heart skip a beat and took my breath away all at the same time! The darling couple wed on August 1, 2010, at the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Inn at Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina - one of my all-time favorite venues. Together, they incorporated vintage and classically Southern details to create a most beautiful event. Let's take a look:
I don't think you could squeeze another ounce of charm into this Southern venue if you tried - Can you get over how deliciously cute that little chapel is? I am loving every single detail ... read on for a glimpse at how the day unfolded, as told by Megan ... So many touching tidbits and even though I read about weddings every day, Megan's story made me tear up just a tiny bit - It's simply beautiful ...
Tell us about your wedding style ... :
I can't help but laugh - I'm not even sure we had an actual 'wedding style'. I suppose when planning I just wanted our wedding to fit the venue and represent us. The Inn at Palmetto Bluff is just as advertised - low country elegance - at its best!!
Personal touches ... :
The most personal touches of our wedding ended up being surprises instead of plans. During the first year Jesse and I were dating he came home from a trip to Charleston with a gift for me ... a brooch. Yes, a pretty brooch - but 5 years down the road he was still joking about the brooch I never wore. While packing for our wedding trip I was going through my jewelry and came across the brooch. The style of it went so well with my dress, I packed it and surprised him when it was attached to my bouquet. It took a while but I finally found its perfect use!!
Jesse decided he wanted to wear his grandfather's (and namesake) wedding band and called his dad to see if that would be okay, given we wanted to have it engraved. When his dad got the ring out he discovered it was already engraved with the his grandparent's initials (same initials as his grandfather, JGW), and the date....... 08-01-40. What are the odds? We were married on the same date as them 08-01-09, 69 years later. Such a neat thing ...
Our personal planned touch would be our now 3 year old yellow-lab. She's such a huge part of our lives, our wedding would not have been the same had she not made her way down the aisle ... which she decided to do twice.. =)
I am still in love with our wedding guest book. A sweet friend (and neighbor) took our engagement pictures, Erin Cobb. She is actually a children's photographer which I believe helped capture the playful, fun loving side of my and Jesse's relationship. These pictures were made into a coffee table book and guests left us the sweetest messages throughout the book.
What was your favorite part of the wedding day?
Goodness...so many things come to mind!!
My grandfather unexpectedly died the week before my wedding. He and Jesse had developed a very close, unique relationship and he had been wanting us to tie the knot for several years. He was so excited about our destination wedding. The chapel Jesse and I were married in sits on the water and as we left the ceremony, we came outside to find a beautiful rainbow stretching over the river. I knew exactly who had something to do with that rainbow! =)
I loved the gospel choir that surprised everyone as they entered the chapel ahead of me, singing me down the aisle to "This Little Light of Mine" and then again as everyone left the chapel to "Oh Happy Day!"
I loved the fact that my dad rarely left the dance floor during the entire reception!! And how our band had everyone circle around us and sing to us "Lean On Me" for the last song of the evening!
I loved the 'after-thought' of s'mores at the fire pits by the river in lieu of a grooms cake. My husband is up for a bonfire any night of the week and this was such a great time for him to truly hang out with his buddies.
What advice do you have to share with fellow brides?
Easy! This is your wedding day - remember this and keep everything else in perspective!! During the months of wedding planning, I heard from so many different brides how stressful their wedding day was, about the breakdowns they had leading up to the wedding, or how glad they were once it was all over. I am happy to say that with the help of my three wonderful sisters and mom - I truly enjoyed planning our wedding. There was not one moment of our wedding day that I didn't feel complete happiness. Palmetto Bluff's service is truly unparalleled! I woke up the next morning and the first thing I thought was 'I hope every bride feels this way the day after her wedding!' I understand now, without a doubt, why people say your wedding is one of the best days of your life!!!

SP*: Sleek + stylish honeymoon packing
Mar 26, 2010 Posted by Sarah Darcy | 4 comments
The only thing I love more than vacationing is packing for a vacation. No, seriously, I love planning out a myriad of different outfits and imagining how I can mix and match them to ensure I'll be able to fit everything into my carry-on and not have to check two extra bags!
When I packed for our honeymoon two years ago, I went pretty light and stuck to the bare essentials as I didn't want to tote much around - a few pairs of sandals, a big beach tote, shorts and tees, several seersucker sundresses, a long strand of pearls and a pair of Kate Spade sunglasses. It was all I needed and I had enough to be comfortable for lounging on the beach, going out at night and everything in between.
With the temps getting warmer here, I thought it would be fun to 'virtually' pack for an imaginary {second} honeymoon to Argentina {I've always wanted to go so why not!} ...
Above is a peek at what would be tops on my list and below are the details and links. What are your packing essentials?
{Clockwise, from top left}
Ruffly swimsuit from J. Crew; Heys XCase Exotic in Crocodile from Shoebuy {love that I'd be able to spot this croc case immediately at baggage claim!}; Gold Isabella Flat from Kate Spade; Shown the Ropes bracelet from Anthropologie; Seaside tote from J. Crew; Gold and Olive Eyeglass Chain from Tissage {for plane or beach reading}; Birkenstock Arizona Suede sandals from Shoebuy.com {Love the comfort factor with these!}

Chris + Vanessa's Rustic Farm Wedding in Gardner, Kansas
Mar 19, 2010 Posted by Sarah Darcy | 13 comments
Although I spent a lot of time focusing on the details to make the day personal, the barn where we had our reception had so much character it really didn't need any dressing up. Mildale Farm is 5 minutes down the country road from my parent's home and I used to drive by it on my way back to college at Kansas State University. It is an amazing sight from the road and I always joked about this being the place where I would get married. Little did I know that the barn was even more beautiful on the inside -and it would be the place where I would get married!
Favorite Moment ... :
The day of the wedding, it was like everything just fell into place. The details we'd spent months planning fit perfectly with the venue - creating the romantic, vintage feel we had hoped for. I remember looking around the barn at one point in the evening when everyone was dancing and it occurred to me that never in my life had I had all of the people that I loved in one place...until then. That was our favorite part of the day! It was everything we had hoped and more :)
Advice ... :
My advice to other brides would be not to stress out too much over the decisions. In the beginning I would go back and forth so much that it felt like we were always discussing, but never accomplishing anything! I finally got to the point where I said "I'm going to decide, be happy with it, and move on!" And I didn't look back after that :) My other piece of advice would be not to worry about how things are "supposed" to be done. Your wedding day will be more personal and more "you" if you don't follow the rules :) Good luck!!

Jenn + Sep's vibrant and super cool wedding in Malibu, Ca.
Elegant ... vibrant ... laidback ... cool ... All of these words come to mind when I try to describe this wedding! Jenn and Sep {how adorable are they?!} wed at a luxury Malibu beach house right off PCH and together they focused on lots of handmade details to give their posh locale a lovely homespun appeal. Let's take a look:
So many adorable details and I am beyond smitten with Jenn's dress! Gorgeous! Now let's hear a little from the bride about her spectacular day ...
Tell us about your wedding style ... :
Overall the wedding style was simple, colorful, and hopefully romantic. We didn't want to have to follow a strict schedule and wanted to be sure the guests had fun with enough food and drink and music! We wanted them to enjoy the beautiful surroundings by the ocean, feel loved and know that they were all very special to us.
Personal touches?
I hand made a lot of things for the wedding which I thoroughly enjoyed!! They included:
- Lemon/lime candle favors
- Painted the little food signs for the buffet
- Used chalkboard paint for the table names and the program/other signs (tables were named after little tidbits of Sepehr and I like "Vegas" which was where we met)
- Cut up fabric pieces for the fabric scrap book sign in
- Handmade all the name cards
- Did all the flowers
- All wedding invitations were hand made as well including the inner envelopes!
We also had a video booth where guests could sit and send a message to us in private. We had some really creative ones too!!
Favorite part of the wedding day?
Favorite part of the wedding day would have to be walking down the aisle to my new husband. I cannot explain the excitement and emotion I felt seeing him standing there, waiting for me. It made me feel immediately calm and at peace when our eyes met. Mushy yes, but so true. Second favorite part would have to be my brother's speech. Since my dad passed away when I was in high school, he really stepped it up and gave a touching speech. It was amazing and I am so thankful for him.
... And the details:
Ceremony & Reception venue - Malibu Luxury Beach House
Bride's attire - Cymbeline from Paris, style Colibri
Makeup/Hair - Nicole Walpert - nicwalpert.hair@gmail.com
Photographer - Christine Lee Smith Photography
Cake - Yummy Cupcake
Persian Dancers - Monica Ramos
Thanks to Jenn and Sep for sharing your big day with us and best wishes for a fabulous future! And a special thanks to photographer Christine Lee Smith for sending over these beautiful photos!

Wednesday Nesting: Help! Camera Shopping {Need Your Advice!!!!}
Mar 10, 2010 Posted by Sarah Darcy | 14 comments

Since nesting isn't all about interior design, I thought I'd stretch the scope of Wednesdays to encompass some lifestyle nesting posts, too ... Some will inevitably deal with J&I's impending move to Germany and you can consider this the first! :o)
For the past few years, I have loved my Nikon Coolpix S550 dearly ... it's always been dependable {We scooped it up w/no research at the nearest store after I dropped my old beloved Canon in the ocean on our honeymoon! Ooooops!! ...} and taken great photos but I'm finally feeling ready to make the transition to a DSLR and I thought now would be a great time to get comfortable with one ... you know, before we're back in Europe and surrounded by such insane beauty that somehow {in my mind} deserves more than what a point-and-shoot can deliver.
And because I plan on sharing so many of our experiences {Read: LOTS of photos} abroad, I thought I would ask for your opinion! So if you're a photographer, amateur or professional, and have had some great experiences with your DSLR, please tell me what you think I should try! I've only ever taken an intro class to photography during college so I'd prefer a DSLR tailored for the super amateur. ;o)
Thanks bunches!!! xox.

Dulcima and Peter's vintage country wedding in Gloucestershire, England
Mar 9, 2010 Posted by Sarah Darcy | 4 comments
When Dulcima sent me photos of her recent wedding, I was instantly smitten - the fabulously executed details appear sublime with just the right balance of rustic love and elegance.
Dulcima and Peter wed on July 25, 2009, at the Painswick Rococo Gardens in Gloucestershire, England before 80 of their closest friends and family. Let's take a peek at their incredible day:
Such a sweet and lovely day - and I love their vintage getaway car! Let's hear a bit from the bride about her beautiful day ...
Tell us your proposal story ... :
We were on holiday in Tobago for our 5th anniversary. Pete organized a speed boat to take us to a private cove, he asked the captain to turn around so I could change and suddenly produced a beautiful diamond ring asking me ‘will you make me the happiest man alive and be my Faraway Valentine’ (our surnames are Valentine and Faraway) Of course I said yes! He had vintage Perrier Jouet on ice and had arranged dinner on another private beach unfortunately sea sickness got to me and we ended up heading back to the hotel, I was devastated at the time but its funny looking back on it now.
Tell us about your wedding venue and style ... :
After considering many different ideas, we were married at the Rococo Gardens in Painswick Gloucestershire. We loved that you could get married outside which is very unusual for venues in the UK. The gardens have a stately feel without being too formal which was perfect for our laidback wedding.
The theme was a vintage country wedding with a rustic edge. We had 80 guests for the ceremony with a further 50 joining us in the evening at the Marquee at Miserden Cricket Ground where my husband plays cricket. The wedding was very DIY, all our friends mucked in which made it a very special and unique day.
Personal Touches ... :
I wore Monique Lhuillier’s Scarlet alencon lace wedding dress, I loved the chic vintage style. I knew I didn’t want a big dress. I wore it with my Grandmothers pearls in remembrance as she has died two weeks before the wedding day. My mother bought each of us three daughters pearl earrings for the wedding.
My bouquet was full of herbs and jasmine which contrasted beautifully with the cream roses, and it looked classic and organic. The table arrangements where designed by myself including cream stocks, cream spray roses, purple lisianthus and freshly picked oregano from my aunt. The flowers were delivered a few days in advance so they would be fully open for the day.
Favorite Moment ... :
As I was approaching the walk up the aisle I felt very nervous, I watched my flower girl, Paige boy and three bridesmaids go and then it was my turn, as my brother and I started the walk a gust of wind took my veil off my head and it flew into the bushes, from then on I could not stop smiling, nothing mattered I was about to marry the man I loved. Walking up that avenue it was magical. When they announced that we were man and wife, we both couldn’t stop smiling.
Advice to fellow brides? ... :
Don’t be afraid to do things yourself and get friends and family involved, it made our day even more special and saved us loads of money. It can be stressful without a wedding planner but on the day itself all the small details won’t matter, things that don’t work won’t be an issue and those that do are a bonus and when people compliment you on your day you can feel proud that it was all your hard work that pulled it off.
We had a joint stag and hen do, I would highly recommend this to couples who have joint friends we had an amazing weekend by the sea which included a fabulous 1920s murder mystery everyone looked fantastic in their costumes!
We waited 6 months to go on honeymoon to get some winter sun in the Maldives, it worked out well as it gave us something else to look forward to after the wedding. Kurumba was the perfect honeymoon destination I highly recommend the couples massage it was exquisite as was everything else. We extended the honeymoon by having a weekend in London first staying at the Rookery hotel which was gorgeous! On the Friday we went to Claridges for dinner and on the Saturday we went to a Jimmy Carr comedy night, it was the perfect start to what was a perfect week.
Congratulations to you, Dulcima and Peter ... and thank you so much for sharing a bit of your day with us!
